What is VICSRAPID?

VICSRAPID is a statewide community - based organisation formed in 1986 to enhance the lifestyle of people with an intellectual disability through access to and choice of opportunities in community sport and recreation, with a particular focus on athletes with an intellectual disability for participation in competitive sports at state, national and international levels.

VICSRAPID is associated with community-based sport and recreation programs ranging from local activities to state, national and international events. - It helps Victorians with intellectual an disability to access them.

VICSRAPID is available to approximately 40,000 Victorians with intellectual disabilities, of whom 4500 plus are already involved in community based activities.  We also are available to people of all ages with disabilities, families, support people, member of general public, groups/organisations (including disability, community, sport and recreation).

Our History 

VICSRAPID was formed in 1986, following a very well attended public meeting, that was chaired by the then Minister for Sport, the late Mr Neil Tresize. Consensus was that there was little opportunity for involvement and/or inclusion in community sport and recreation for Victorians with an intellectual disability.  

Consequently it was unanimously decided to take positive steps to create fairer opportunities and an Interim Committee was formed at that  meeting to "make it happen".

VICSRAPID has been doing exactly that now for twenty-one years.

• Victoria is the sporting and recreational state of Australia and the expectation of Victorians with a wide range in levels of ability is to have access to opportunities and  choice for participation in activities, events and competitions.

• It is also imperative that all sports and recreational groups and organisations are appropriately prepared to encourage and include those people who wish to participate in the activities, events and competitions of their choice.

• Our vision for the future is that such inclusion will be the acknowledged process and no longer be viewed as unique.

Our Role 

• Advocate and lobby for maximum opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities.

• Provide service development consultancy to sport, recreation and disability associations.

• Provide relevant information on availability of sport and recreation programs and services.

• Create access, initiate programs and assist people with intellectual disabilities to integrate into sport and recreation at local, state, national and inter- national level.
